when i got my computer it had xp already on it. I think
it was a pirated copy. Some of the fixes I cann't get
because of an invalid registery. I want to know if I have
to buy a whole new xp operating system or if I can buy an
upgrade version and write over my bad copy.

You can go to my documents, help, chk,"is this version of
xp valid",if you registered xp in the begining,it prob-
ably is valid, pirated eliminates this.Do you have a
xp cd,or recovery disk(s) for xp,yes would mean a valid
copy.W/O any, head to the retail store, install xp cd,
boot to cd,install new copy if it lets you,if not the
upgrade version you just bought wont work, youll need a
full version of home or pro.

A up-grade would be ok on the first install, but if you
had to format , you would have to have some qualifing OS
to re-install it. If you have a old 98 disk then get a
upgrade, if not then if you want to keep your data and
programs then you would have to do a repair install.

Here is a full retail version of Pro for $ 156.00

The upgrade is not for upgrading from pirated XP copies, just previous
legitimate versions.

Such a version is not legitimate at all - so is not a legitimate
'qualifying product' for an upgrade. Unless you have a regular CD of
such a qualifying product - eg a retail win98 or ME CD - you will need a
Full version, which though you should be able to run in an Upgrade mode
from the present system as it does not check on eligibility
