Bad updates, waiting to get me

How can I get rid of critical updates waiting to be installed?

Background:
When I had Automatic Updates turned on, Win XP downloaded some huge critical updates. I already had SP 2 installed, but one was so huge that it must have thought I reverted back to SP 1 and tried to reinstall SP 2. I'm not sure that is what it was, but I don't see how any other update could be that large. Anyway, this huge update was corrupted, and my computer would crash after trying for about an hour to install it.

I reinstalled SP 2 from disk to make sure it's good. I am still disconnected from the internet to prevent confusing the situation with more downloaded updates, but those two updates (one of which is probably corrupted), are still there asking to be installed. I would like to wipe them out and do a manual update.

Thanks!

Turn off Automatic Updates, then install the updates manually from the
Windows Update Catalog and turn on Automatic Updates again when you
are done.

Thank you. I followed your advice, and I am much better off than I was
before.

I still have one update, however, which will not install. It is
KB885835. I have seen other references to a problem with this update, but
no solutions; so I may not find one either.

The update has to do with a security issue with WordPad, and I never use
WordPad. If you know of a way to get this installed, I would be delighted.
If not, is there a way to prevent Windows Update from finding it all the
time? Since it is a critical update, Windows Update won't allow me to hide
it.

You could post this to
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate for more
help. Include a description of what happens when you attempt to
install the update.
