backups, restore points

Are restore points basically a copy of the entire Registry? .... and are
separate from Backups?

In other words, if I deleted all the backups stored on my Recovery D: drive,
the 'restore points' are still on drive D, correct?

(If this is a dumb question feel free to educate me.)

Plus other system files essential for proper system operation.

yes, but usually backups include data not recovered with System Restore.
 
I should also add that I needed to try a system restore yesterday due to a
problem, and all 7 system restore points failed due to an 'unknown error'
About 2 weeks ago, one worked and solved a problem. I personally feel that
one should use both backups and the restore points.

Go to Start/Help and Support. Search for "System Protection."

Click the "System Restore Frequently Asked Questions" in the results. This
will give you a good description of SR, how it works and how to use it.

Yes, and other important operating system files.

Yes. When someone talks about a backup, he normally means either a backup of
his data, or an image of his entire hard drive. Either of those is very
different from what System Restore does.
 
Absolutely not. I haven't had any Norton product on my computer. I did
have Ghost on a previous computer but no other Norton products will ever be
on my computers. Ghost was just Drive Image relabeled at that point.
There were 7 normal restore points plus the undo restore point from my
networking restore problem. None of the seven worked. All seemed to work
until reboot when a message appeared that nothing had been changed due to
'an unknown error'
