Backups in Windows XP Professional

Dave

I have been unable to create any kind of system backup in
Windows XP Professional using the Backup tool in System
Tools. Whenever I run this routine, I get an error
message stating that "Error returned while creating the
volume shadow copy:80042301. Aborting Backup."

Anyone have any suggestions for what may be wrong?

Forget the backup utility, use the file transfer wizard in xp,preffered us
by microsoft tech.Set computer as old, copy data to a file that you created
when its thru, transfer file to cd or to another hd.This backs up all user data
the only thing not backed up are system files, even system settings are backed up.

Hi,

As far as I know, there are three possible causes for this specific
problem (NTBackup fails with 80042301):

1) The COM+ Event System service was manually disabled (open
services.msc and, if this is the case, re-enable this service). This
service should be enabled by default.

2) There was a problem in the final phase during Windows Setup. To
double-check, just run the following command:
REG QUERY HKLM\System\Setup

If the SystemSetupInProgress or UpgradeInProgress values are different
than zero, then something wrong happened during setup, and you will
get the 80042301 message.

To fix this issue in this case, please run the two commands below:

REG ADD HKLM\system\setup /v SystemSetupInProgress /t REG_DWORD /d 0

REG ADD HKLM\system\setup /v UpgradeInProgress /t REG_DWORD /d 0

3) The COM+ infrastructure failed to properly install during Windows
Setup. To reinstall COM+, please follow the steps from this KB
article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315296

Please let me know if the problem could not be fixed with the steps
above.

In addition, can you look if there are any VSS and COM+ errors in the
Event Log? If yes, can you copy & paste them in your reply? Please use
eventvwr to copy & paste the events since the private data might also
be useful.

Thanks, Adi

I am having this same problem with XP pro.

I have made successful backups in the past, though. I am trying to mak
system state backups, and get the same error:
------------------------------------------------
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042301
Aborting Backup.
------------------------------------------------

My:
COM+ service is running, in manual.
MS Software Shadow Copy Provider service is in automatic
Volume Shadow Copy service is running, in manual

I followed the above advice, and got this error while re-installin
COM+ :
------------------------------------------------
Sub-component COM+ raised an exception while processing th
OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION setup message.

d:\nt\com\com1x\src\complussetup\comsetup\ccompluscore.cpp (line 565)

Error Code = 0x80040155

Interface not registered

The COM+ event classes could not be registered.
------------------------------------------------

I find these errors in my event viewer:
------------------------------------------------
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routin
IMultiInterfaceEventControl::GetSubscriptions. hr = 0x80040155.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error on creating/using the COM
Writers publisher interface: IVssWriter::RequestWriterInfo
GatherWriterMetadata [0x8000ffff].

End Operation: Warnings or errors were encountered.
Consult the backup report for more details.
------------------------------------------------

I have been messing with this problem for about a month, I can'
resolve it.
I wonder if it can be resolved, at this point.
I was thinking of formating, and re-installing XP, as I don't feel a
safe with it if I can't fall back to a saved registry with it.

What do you think
