Running Windows Mail; Vista Home Prem 32 Bit....

I have an external USB Drive labeled as Drive L:\. I see a WINDOWS MAIL
Folder on that drive....among many Sub Folders in this Folder I see Backup.
Windows Mail is installed on my C:\ Drive. I opened Windows Mail and looked
for Backup....could not file that menu item. The Folder labeled Windows Mail
shows it was established...11/08....however this mail client has been
installed and active on my PC since August '08.

What is this Folder on my L:\ drive? Is there a setting within Windows Mail
that establishes\creates\controls backups into this folder? I don't even
understand how this Folder\sub Folders got created on my L:\ drive because I
have never set anything up...

Windows Mail doesn't have a "backup" feature.
Something else must have created that folder on your L: drive.

The backup in the message store is a backup of the database only and occurs
once per day. There is no documentation whatsoever on how this works. I
have no idea how you got files on the L drive without copying them there
yourself. Perhaps some 3rd party program put them there, but WinMail
didn't.

The "Mystery" ius there....the Folder on my External L:\ Drive is definitely
Windows mail; when you place the mouse over it it shows a date of 11/11/08.
As I open and explore the Folders...there are Inbox\Outbox\Sent....sub
Folders and when I click on a file in those boxes a Windows Live mail e-mail
opens. I understand that Windows mail has no backup feature, but surely its
there on my L:\ drive. Although I doubt not a factor, I do run the Microsoft
Outlook Backup utility and it is set to do the Outlook Backup on the L:\
drive....and I also see a Root Outlook Back Folder on L:\. Too
strange.......

I have no idea what the Microsoft Outlook Backup utility is. Also, you are
now referring to 3 different programs, so its not clear which you are
actually using.

steve

I have Outlook 2007 and Windows Live Mail installed. I use Outlook, my wife
uses Live Mail.

The Utility I was referring to is SCANPST.exe; the backup utility that is
part of Outlook.

Neither Outlook nor Windows Live Mail is covered in this newsgroup,
which is dedicated to he Windows Mail program.

Sorry; I opened the Mail Program just now and I was wrong....it is Windows
Mail....so I was posting in the correct newsgroup.

As both Steve and I indicated earlier, there is no feature in Windows Mail
that makes a "backup". If you suspect Outlook of creating that backup,
ask about it in the Outlook newsgroup.

I still believe I am in the right Newsgroup....would it shed any further
light on this question if I reported, when I go to the external drive (L:\),
Click on the Folder Windows Mail\I see many Sub Folders (Backup; Compact;
Local Folders; Microsoft Communities; Stationary, etc...and if I click on
LOCAL FOLDERS, I see several more Sub Folders....Deleted items; Inbox;
Outbox; etc...and if I click on INBOX, I see files...clicking on any of the
Files OPENS a Windows mail InBox Message.

You can name a folder Backup, without creating the ability to use it to
help with backups.

Also, Windows Mail often has problems connecting to external drives
at all.

So you have messages there. Windows Mail did NOT put them there.
