The best way to backup Windows Mail in Vista Ult

J

JDR

I'd like to transfer my all windows mail / messages from Vista 32 bit to
Vista 64 bit
after installing clean Vista 64 bit on other Hard Drive which will be
inserted as a new C;\
on the same PC. An old C:\ drive might / my not be included to this PC.

An Easy Transfer is not in my case the best option.
The Exporting from Vista Windows Mail does not back up all my
folders and sub folders from Windows Mail directory. Not to
mention that so called "Imported " folders are not the best
to handle.

Any help will be apreciated.

You want to backup the message store and registry keys listed here for
WinMail: www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx . Then on the new install, first
backup and then delete the same registry keys (make sure you make a backup
as its not clear this will work going from 32 to 64 bit). Then merge the
keys you backed up on the old install. Then copy the message store back to
the same location it was in on the old machine and make sure the location
matches what is listed as the "Store Root" under the Windows Mail registry
key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail).

Then start WinMail and it should be as on the older machine.

Thanks Steve,
I'll study it in details, as it sounds, it's not so easy when 32 and 64 bit
OS
is involved but this is exactly what I was searching for. I'm not so good
with Windows Mail Registry, but determined to succeed...-;)
Thanks again

I've read this www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx . and using the Regedit
exported to drive D:\ the;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\IAM

.... and then this bit comes :
Then copy the message store back to the same location it was in on the
old machine and make sure the location matches what is listed as the
"Store Root" under the Windows Mail registry key
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail).

For some reason exporting doesn't allow to save thgese files on
external HDD in Acasa enclosure. (?) But was Ok to export it to
drive D:\.

That was quite a job...-;)

You don't need to use File | Export. Just copy the entire message store
directory.

I've tried both ways. Still working on it. Somehow I'm more confident
with "File | Export. " way that playing with Registry.
Thanks again.

You don't use anything in the registry if you just copy the message store
directory.
