Running Xp Pro...want to run Backup for first time. In Backup to what, I do
not see my dvd/cd drive listed as target, just my floppy and zip drives.

Thanks

Can't use XP backup to write to a DVD or CD directly. Need to save to hard
drive and burn using burning software. Also, the backup program with XP
isn't the greatest program either but it is free.

Windows XP's Backup is, well, to say it nicely, a bit awkward to use.
That or less than reliable. IMO.

If your DVD works, then its how you are using it. You can't write to a
DVD like you do a hard drive or floppy or usb hd drive or usb thumb
drive. You have to 'burn' the data with a program that writes headers
and trailers and data in a specific CD/DVD format.

I suggest looking on the internet for programs. Roxio, Easy CD
Creator, Nero, and a good number of others. They not only allow you
to write one CD/DVD but they will also allow you to do a 'backup' of
more than 4.7 gig by writing it across several DVD's. If you use
rewritables, you can use it just like tape drives of old days. You
just need to use the same program to read them.

There may be free 3rd party programs, I don't have one, Nero came with
my CD drive I bought. So that's my program of choice.

XP NTbackup does not write its backup files to shiny media. Only to
harddrive or tape. If you need to use shiny media then you need a third
party backup program.
