Having been the victim of a hard drive crash recently, I want to do a
complete backup onto cd's....but in the path when I get to where I want to
store the backup, my cd drive (D)is not shown as any of the choices listed.
I have a 3 1/2 floppy, a zip, and a dvd drive. I have a blank cd in the
drive.

How can I do the backup onto cd's?

Thanks

You didn't mention which program you used. Ntbackup doesn't allow for
backing up to CDs or DVDs. Either get an external hard drive or use a
program that will allow you to back up to CDs or DVDs.

Acronis True Image has lots of fans. If you're looking for something
free, have a look at:

I'm running Win XPPro, and following their instructions for the back up...I
says I can back up to my floppy or my zip but there is no cd drive listed as
an option.

Re read the reply, I quote "Ntbackup doesn't allow for backing up to CDs or
DVDs", you'll have to use 3rd party software to back up to CD/DVD

At risk of multiposting, when you say NT Backup, etc....are you saying Win
XP? I'm not running Win NT

Yes, you are. Vista is another version of NT as well.

Assuming you have an 80Gig drive that's half full. Further assume the backup
can achieve 50% compression (on average). This means the backup will need
20Gigs of backup media.

Since a CD can hold, oh, 650Megs, you'll need about 31 CDs. At eight minutes
apiece, four hours to complete the backup.

Now you COULD replace the CD-drive with a DVD drive. DVDs hold upwards of 4
Gbytes. That means you'll only need five DVDs, and, at 25 minutes apiece,
you should be done in an a little over two hours.

Of course if you have 80Gigs worth of stuff to back up, you'll need to
double the above estimates.

Backups of your most important directories is the most important, NOT a
backup of your entire drive. Do backups of your most important data on
several forms of media. Heck, I just got a few 2 gig USB sticks for $15
each.
