I have read that in windows xp the" system state "is the registry .If I go
to regedit and backup the registry it takes up about 100Mb of disc space. If
I then use the windows backup and backup the system state it uses about
450Mb. I don`t understand what is going on! Can someone explain this please?

Search using Google!

(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

You didn't read enough (whatever you read..)
http://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+the+"system+state"+in+Windows+XP

The system state includes the registry, the COM+ Class Registration
Database, files under Windows File Protection and your boot files.
It is not just the registry that is being backed up when you select 'System
State'...
