If I do backup my system state how do I access my PC if windows won't load at
all due to having installed a bad driver?

Hi Tom,

I assume you are referring to creating a restore point with System
Restore.

System Restore can be access from within Windows, Safe Mode and Safe
Mode Command Prompt.

All About System Restore in WinXP

It is a very good practice to create a restore point before installing
any new software, hardware or making setting changes to the system.
Restoring to a point before the bad driver was installed should roll
back the driver to that point.

In the case of a bad driver, Last Known Good Configuration may be
useful.
Choosing the Last Known Good Configuration startup option provides a way
to recover from problems such as a newly added driver that may be
incorrect for your hardware. It does not solve problems caused by
corrupted or missing drivers or files.
When you choose Last Known Good Configuration, only the information in
registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet is restored. Any changes you
have made in other registry keys remain.

feature in WinXP

Thanks Bert, but I guess I missed in my question. I'm using the backup
program that will back up the System State onto a DVD. But my system not
infrequently will get constipated with a driver from a new program work fine
until I restart it. Then as windows loads it restarts and that's it, even if
I go to "last good config that worked." I don't now how to boot from a DVD or
CD that I've made. They're not bootable.

:

Tom what program did you use to create the backup? The backup program
that comes with XP, ntbackup, cannot backup to DVD. You say you backed
up to DVD so you must have used a different program.

Shouldn't be. I suppose the OP had the DVD-RW formatted for UDF use, ie. as
a large floppy....
Then you could use it for ntbackup, but only if the backup fits on one (1)
disk, as I guess it can't span...

Yes, I didn't realize that is what happened. My new software begins to format
a DVD-RW as soon as it is recognized. It's great to be able to use large
volume media. Smart stuff.
