backup win2k files and data to ext hard disk b4 xp upgrade

I have been looking for help on this but can't find any postings. I want to
upgrade a computer to xp but want back up data and relevant system files and
preferences from win2k to an external hard disk before I re-initialize the
hard disk and do a clean instlal of xp. Most upgrade postings cover different
scenarios such as migrating to new computer or doing a dual os install on
one machine. I know if I try to manually move the files, I will miss
something important.

I also will want to upgrade office 2003 to office xp.

Thanks

What specifically do you need help with? Copy your data, export your mail
store and address book, export your IE favorites and any other relevant data
to a safe place while you do the clean install. Also note that Office 2003
is newer than Office XP

Unplug your external drive then to do a clean install boot the Windows XP
install CD-Rom. When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or
other partitions found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install,
then again restart the pc booting the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.
