Backup Utility

R

Rich

I purchased a Sony VAIO computer that came with XP Home
Edition pre-installed. I was given only Recovery Disks. My
question is - How can I get the Backup Utility that is
supposed to be on the XP Home Edition CD-ROM.

It is really quite unbelievable the number of people who keep on
posting this question (about backup in XP Home) in the newsgroups,
although as Evita said, the answer was here all the time.
There must be hundreds of posts giving the answer on this in every XP
group.

Which is why I'd like to insert a few words of praise for people like
Ken Blake, who patiently points posters in the right direction with
never a harsh word or sign of exasperation. Thank you Ken!

Ken, I'm really impressed, and you certainly are a credit to your
parents. But please pretty please could you sometimes explain to the
lazy, ignorant or stupid how to search the newsgroups to see if the
answer to their problem is already there, instead of cluttering them
up with redundant queries?

And to the lazy or ignorant, could you please do a quick search of the
appropriate groups before blindly posting and revealing to all just
how lazy and ignorant you are?

Just my 2c worth.

Peter,
Your words of wisdom have touched my heart. I just hope those that
you call "please could you sometimes explain to the
"lazy, ignorant or stupid ", are that and not some newbie that needs
help. Then again, I am not a newbie and I still have a problem
finding answers to questions. Have you ever spent several hours going
through the newgroups, and google to find an answer and not be able
to. Or how about going into MS KB and trying to find something there
when you are not sure what words they use to identify your problem.
If you find these people to be a bother to you, why even bother
to read the NG or respond.

I don't believe Pete was calling them stupid.......maybe lazy...which most
of there appear to be...just look at the questions....very little, if any up
front homework, research, whatever was done by these folks......
Most things are after the deed has been done...NOT seeking the info
before...adding a drive....upgrading to Xp.....whatever.....people just
start popping in disks, drives, etc...then find
out...oooopppppssss.......well.....would you want them working for or even
with you......

Ken, I don't know if it's a glitch in the beta I'm running but the
link you posted to ntbackup.msi only returned a page full of
gibberish to me.

I just tried it here, Michael. It downloads the file fine.

Maybe it's just a beta thing bit I posted the link in case anyone else runs
into the same issue. This is the second time I've had this happen on a
direct link to a download.

Dan,
I don't quibble at the newbie who really doesn't know what to do, and
yes, many times I have searched and modified my search criteria a
dozen times and still found nothing, but these people who keep posting
about how to backup in XP Home really get my goat, because the answer
has been posted not once, not twice, but hundreds of times.
They are either too lazy or to stupid to do a simple search on
"backup". I admit my patience is not one of my best features, which
is why I am so full of admiration for guys like Ken Blake, who don't
get upset or sarcastic, and just keep giving the answers.
In our ocker slang, goodonya Ken!

I'm not trying to advise an MS-MVP (I wish I were experienced enough),
but just reporting what happened to me.
Clicking gave me a page of gibberish - shift clicking enabled the file
download.

OK, I don't want a flame war going as that was not my objective. I
know from first hand experience that there are times when I put forth
a question as I have no idea where the answer might be, that's because
I don't know how to ask a question in the KB or Google and sometimes
even here in the NG I will post a question. You say they don't do
homework, how many of these people that do ask the questions are
newbies. Besides, I was always under the impression that NG was a
place to go to help each other reguardless of how stupid the question
may sound.
Being a teacher of k-12, technical and corporate training, I have
always told my students that the most stupidest question that anyone
can ask "is the one they don't." How many times during your growth
with computers did you have a question and really didn't know where to
go?
As far as the NG's go, I am here to help when I can and ask when I
have. If people find it a bother that someone ask's a question that
is redunet, so be it.
Ok, I have said enough.. this is my last statement on this subject.

Thanks, JD, but I still got gibberish when I tried that. There is an issue
but I believe it is a beta issue and I'll have to resolve it there if I can
duplicate it with other similar download links.

Skip, I agree, there are no stupid questions. Most of the complaints are
not because of the content of the question but that such questions are asked
over and over. This could be rectified if users just searched the
newsgroups for similar topics as they would not only find several with the
same problem but find their answers as well.

That said, most of the people posting to these groups now are not using a
standard newsreader, Outlook Express, Agent, etc. They are instead posting
from the web interface. Unfortunately, the search function on the web
interface is terrible and rarely useful to those posting from that gateway,
hence, we see the same questions over and over, breeding a lot of
frustration for them and for many of the regulars on these boards.

In fairness, many of those frustrated have never seen or used the web
interface, some are not even aware it exists, hence, they are unfamiliar
with the issue.

In your case, the properties of your post shows you are using Forte's Agent
which should afford you the ability to search the headers of a newsgroup for
similar issues for which solutions have already been posted.

Michael,
I agree and thank you for reminding me about the "WEB" interface. I
at first started using the same web interface and unfortuenly I have
to use the web from work. I hate it because you can't do a good
search, you only have a very limited usage of that interface.
Well, that's it from me.
