Backup utility

I just tried the backup utility with a USB HD on my desktop pc successfully.
However, I am looking for the answers to a number of queries as below.

1. Where is the backup catalogue stored? On desktop pc or backup.bkf on
USB HD. If the catalogue is stored on desktop pc, once my harddisk is
crashed, how can I restore the backup file?

2. I tried to backup the data files only. Can I backup the whole system
file on drive C. Is it really workable on the replacement harddisk if my
harddisk is crashed?

Thanks,

Ray

ray I CAn answer the gest of question 1 if backed up
correctly you can restore to any xp system with ntbackup
installed so all that is needed to restore is on the
backup.

2 no ntbackup is not cloning software and you cannot
clone the hard drive with ntbackup you need norton ghost
or partition quest etc. to do that.

Both of your questions have the same answer. All of the information needed
for the restore is in the .bkf file. If your hard disk is unreadable and you
need to restore from a backup done with ntbackup the procedure is as
follows.

1) Install new hard drive.
2) Install Windows XP
3) Run ntbackup to restore data

If you backup everything including the system state your pc will be restored
to it's original file structure. If you are looking for a easier, quicker
way then a disk imaging program like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost is
the answer. They are easier to understand and use than ntbackup. With
ntbackup you would have to go through the complete Windows install process
including finding and loading drivers before being able to restore. With the
other programs you can boot from a recovery disk and do everything in one
step.
