The Microsoft instructions to backup files for Windows
XP - Home Edition gives the following instructions:

Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools,
BACKUP. When I get to System Tools there is no option to
select that says 'Backup'.

Backup is not installed by default on xp home. You have to install it from
the valueadd folder on the xp home cd. I think it's called ntbackup.

Backup is installed automatically on XP Professional, but not on
XP Home. If you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the
CD, in \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by
doubleclicking the file ntbackup.msi.

If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

Backup is not installed on Home. If it is a retail CD you will find it
there in
Valueadd\Microsoft\\Backup
and r-click the NTBackup.msi and take Install. It very rarely comes
with an OEM copy of Home

It is not very useful anyway. It is a tape based system, supplied I
think with Pro for people moving on from NT. In particular it does not
recognise CDs as output media, and though you can write to a CD through
one of the 'packet writing' systems lie Direct CD, it will not span to a
subsequent disk
