No XP CD

I have an HP Pavilion a720n, model PJ509AA-ABA, AMD Athlon XP 3200+
processor, Processor Speed 2.20GHz, 512MB P2700 DDR SDRAM memory,
200 GB Ultra DMA hard drive, running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
SP2.0.

XP was preloaded when I purchased the computer and no installation CDs
accompanied the computer. Booklet instructions stated I was to create
RESTORE
disks which I did.

I want to back up my files using the back up utility normally
found in Accessories > System Tools > Backup. I have instructions that
say I must install the utility via Add/Remove Program with the
Windows XP CD. Since I don’t have the CDs, how do I get this program???
START=>ALL PROGRAMS=>ACCESSORIES=>SYSTEM TOOLS=>BACKUP.

When I inserted the RESTORE disk, something happened which caused me to
corrupt the
\$WIN_NT$.~BY\SYSTEM32\BIOS.INF file which causes an error code 14 on IPL.

How do I retrieve this file???
Thanks,

Contact those who sold you the computer. They are directly responsible for
your Windows XP Technical Support.
Tell them you want a true Windows XP Installation CD.

(You can also download Windows XP BACKUP from the web..)

From my experience there is a hidden drive on your HDD where i386 directory
reside. Did you try to add windows components and you get prompted for XP
CD?

Surely under the terms of HP's licence, with HP, they are only obligated to
supply a means of putting the PC back to factory supply condition. Which
means a 'restore' option and not a MS Win cd?

NTBackup would be in the Value Add folder on a Retail or Upgrade CD of
Windows XP Professional/Home Edition.

But, for those users with OEM Media, this feature is often not available.

Third party websites however, do make these items available
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi
You can use this link to download NTBackup

You can follow these steps to use NTBackup

Thus no mention of obligations.. only the suggestion than an upset customer
call and demand a better level of service from a company.

Obligations is *not* equivalent to customer satisfaction.

It does. It also means they do not have to include non-essential "value add"
utilities like MS Backup (which is precisely what HP and many others do).

You're not going to get a true Windows XP Installation CD, that's not
what you payed for.
Most consumer machines ship with a restore cd, some create extra
partitions but I've yet to see a vendor explain what they're for. Maybe
their tech support use them for trouble shooting or future installs.
Give tech support a call. Best bet is to get an image backup program,
restoring to purchase state isn't always what you want after you've done
a bunch of configuring.

You never know what you might get, unless you ask.

This is exactly the situation I had. I'll just purchase a backup program.
Thanks for the info.
