is not on my System Tools in Accessories; just restore.
How do I run Backup (not found in search).
Thanks,
Don

Hi Don

If you are running XP Home.

The backup utility isn't installed by default with XP Home Edition.
Depending on what kind of XP CD you have, the backup utility may be found in
the valueadd\msft\ntbackup folder on the XP Home CD.

Hi Don,

In Pro you can find it here: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup

The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP
Home Edition. The Backup icon is not present on the Start menu in Windows XP
Home Edition, nor is Backup listed in Add Remove Programs for Windows XP
Home edition.

To manually install Backup for a Home "retail" version:

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows
XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup: CD-ROM Drive
:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

SP2 can cause a few systems serious problems during or after installation.
In a very, very few cases systems will be rendered unable to boot to
windows. This is rare. By creating a full system backup you can easily
revert back to a functional OS in the event that SP2 isn't successful.
Which, once again, is rare. It is not necessary to make a full system backup
prior to upgrading but you should backup important data. It is always
prudent to make backups especially before upgrading. However if you decide
to create a full system backup then you need to use third party software.

The backup program that ships with XP is essentially useless for doing full
system backups. There are a number of good programs available for this.
Symantec Ghost and Acronis TrueImage are common programs that can create
full system backups, or image files, directly to CD, DVD, USB or network
drives.
