Windows 98 allowed me to backup to a cd. Windows XP does
not. HP online support was unable to help me with the
problem and stated that XP does not support using the
backup program with the cd writer. HOW CAN THIS BE???

There must be a way to backup a large file so that it can
be taken home to a secure with out having to use time
consuming copy.

Use a 3rd party program such as CD Creator 6.0 (with drag-to-disk) or Nero
(with In-CD).

You can backup to CD in XP also, however, you first have to write to
the hard drive (backup folder) and then burn to CD.

Note: This will not allow you to span CDs. Why not buy some decent
backup software that will allow you to burn directly to CDs or DVDs
and also span the backup at the same time?

When backups are discussed in magazines and newslists these days, it
seems that it is always to CDs or DVDs. I do have Nero that would
let me backup to a CD, but, although backing up to another HD makes
sense (if you have a removable HD large enough, which I do not),
using CDs for backup just never made sense to me except for
transferring an occasional group of files.

With today's huge hard drives, it would take a lot of CDs to backup a
system. I still use a tape-backup for that (because I do not have
removable HDs) but I am intrigued with those who backup to CDs. That
must take a long time to do for a decent backup - even if it is just
for data files and you would have to stand there to switch CDs.

Maybe someone can explain to me what I am missing.

I don't think you are missing anything. CDs are suitable for
backup of data, but unless you have a very small hard drive, not
for complete backup of a hard drive.

I use a pair of removable hard drives for backup, alternating
between their use.

The "neat" solution is to buy an external USB hard drive. I got one for
under $100 which holds 40GB. Perfect for backups. I keep it turned off
except when I back up or restore from it. That protects it from viruses,
etc. And it (and my computer) are USB 2.0 so it's faster than firewire. A
long time ago I used tape for backup and it was a drudge. Especially to
find something. It took FOREVER to mechanically drive the tape to find the
target. With a hard drive, it's THERE.......NOW!
