I am unable to restart my Windows XP professional OS.
Problem: It comes up with a black screen saying "Windows XP starting
up", i.e. it comes prior to the LOGON screen and then stays there
forever.
I am unable to resolve the problem using Windows XP repair option. Is
it possible to take the backup of the existing files on windows XP OS.
Any help please?

If Windows will not start up then it will be difficult to get a backup
except by removing the hard drive and installing it (temporarily at
least) as an additional hard drive into a functioning computer. You
could then use that computer to locate and backup the files that you
need.

It may be possible to fix your Windows XP problem. Have you tried
booting into Safe Mode? To boot Windows XP into Safe Mode turn on
the computer and start tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon as the
first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping
until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears and choose Safe Mode from
the menu.

If it will start okay in Safe Mode then it may be possible to fix the
problem. Start by using System Restore (Start - All Programs -
Accessories - System Tools - System Restore) and choose the most
recent restore point that is prior to the onset of your problems,
which will probably just be the most recent restore point.

Also if you had connected any new hardware to the computer just before
the problem started then disconnect that hardware until the computer
is back running normally again. And if you had installed any new or
updated software just before the problem started then use Control
Panel - Add/Remove Programs to uninstall that software.

Good luck
