Backup Storage

OK, so Home computers were released WAHOO! Shocking! right, first you have
the good old audio tapes to store data on, Slow, and don't hold all that
much, then we get the 5-1/4" disks, bit faster, yet still not very big,
altho for the time, you could back your whole system up on what 3 maybe 4 of
these disks, then you get 3-1/2" floppy's, WOW now were talking, Small
disks, that are twice as big as the bigger disks, BARGIN hard drives get
bigger with that aswell, so it still takes maybe about 5 of these disks to
back your system up (yes i know they were in more than one sizes, i'm
ignoring that fact) well, hard disks continued to get bigger, machines
faster, so we get Zip disks, 100MB ok, use a few of these to back the system
up, but again there is always something else. And we got the CD writers, now
were talking firstly 650MB on one disk, GREAT, so again, we're using 5-6 of
these to back our system up, again drives get bigger, machines faster, and
we get DVD-R's WIKKID so now we can have somewhere between 4-7GB on ONE
DISK,

then you have the old sluggish backup Tape Drives, yes they might be able to
hold 40GB of data, but would you like to grab readme.txt rou that folder
over there off one of them? i think not, so now we have Win XP, i my self
have 5 computers in this house, 3 running win XP one on 2000 and one on ME
(urgh) and i have to say that when it comes down to it i wouldn't go back to
the old machines after XP, however, my point here, is that on this machine i
have 2X 220GB drives, thats 440GB almost 1/2 a TB its great, keep my DVD's
on it to save rummaging through disks all the time, but this morning i
wanted to do a backup, now here are my options DVD, expensive for the disks,
but hold alot of data, CD's, nice & cheap, but how many would that take to
do a backup? Tape drive, yeah, holds the data, maybe use about 6 of them
backing the data i have up, but VERY slow, and you can't access A file of
them willingly & easily, so here's the question, now windows is getting
bigger, and all the apps and things that come for it aswel, along with
greating huge files, i have a big database here, nice to backit up, what
media are we supposed to backup onto now, without having a shelf full of
disks (i took CD's in the end, i don't have a DVD writer yet, so i only
backed 1/2 my drive up on about 200 CD's, you get my point)

Sorry its long, had to get the story through, right?

let me know your views.

Forgot the 8" floppy before the 5 1/4" floppy
What about these new USB pocket drives.
They have from 16mb to 512mb storage.

Fast...clean...unplug and walk to different computer
plug in...working...I have 4-512mb and nothing on my
hard drive but windowsXP/Plus! stuff.

They are getting cheaper and I picked mine up with
some good rebates/discounts.

I think we already knew all of that. :)

I just use an external hard drive that is slightly larger than the installed
drive and back up to that. Hard drives are very cheap and very dependable
when they are only used once a week or so.

Pocket drives?? You would need a really big pocket to put them all in!

Seriously, people back up their HDD on...another HDD. They are so
(relatively) dang cheap now. It's the way to go.
