Backup programs crash with

I have tried Stomp Backup MyPC 5.0 and NovaBackup 7.1, and both crash
with the same error:

The application, C:\Program Files\NovaStor\NovaBACKUP\NSENGINE.exe,
generated an application error The error occurred on 07/12/2004 @
22:46:15.557 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 1003CC4A
(nsecore!CNsecore__CNsecore)

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Both have the same exact exception (c0000005). I'm wondering if it
could be a problem with either my hard drive or my motherboard? I
really don't have any other ideas. I've tried everything, including
disabling norton Antivirus Auto-Protect.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful!

Does everything include disabling everything using msconfig, rebooting,
and trying the backup program?

I never heard of msconfig, I'm going to try this out and post the
results. Thanks for the tip.

I just tried a backup in safe mode and I get the same exact error. I
also was trying to render a video last night and it froze every time.
The thing they have in common is that they both were writing to my
second hard drive. I'm wondering if it's either a problem with the
IDE controller or the hard drive??

I saw only the reply, what backup program do you use?

Stomp Backup MyPC & NovaBackup. both crash with the same error.
Today I successfully backed up some individual directories, so I now
suspect that maybe I have a corrupt file or something that is crashing
the backup program. I'm trying to narrow it down but it takes time.

I did lots more backups. I backed up a directory containing 8 gigs.
First time it worked, second time it failed. This happened again and
again with different files/directories. It seems almost random, and
very rarely succeeds. The bigger the backup the less likely it will
succeed.

I used this backup software several times under windows 2k over the
past few months and it just started failing recently, first with 2k
and now with XP. I thought it might be the video but since it fails
in safe mode I'm not sure. What else can it be besides the
motherboard or memory? I hate to buy a new motherboard and have the
same problem but I'm so fed up with this I don't know what else to
try!

I've done several more tests and from what I can tell if I use
compression it crashes every single time and if I turn compression off
it never crashes.

I solved the problem by increasing the voltage to the CPU and memory.
Apparently when doing cpu intensive tasks like rendering video or a
backup with compression, the cpu/memory got unstable and the program
crashed. Since I increased both one notch it hasn't crashed once. My
CPU is running 56 degrees though so I think I need to get a better
heatsink or fan.

Just a follow-up note, in order to help others: I bought a new
motherboard and now everything is fine. It was definitely the
motherboard. Now my CPU temp is 44 even when 100% used rendering
video. With the Epox I was over 50 idle. I also applied artic silver
to the CPU/heatsink when I upgraded, so that could help too.

Life's too short and motherboards too cheap to suffer through crashes
caused by a bad motherboard!
