Backup Over a Network

We recently upgraded some old Win98 and 2K machines to new
boxes running XP Pro. We have a tape backup device on a
workstation that maps the various workstations to
individual drives. We then use MS Backup to do the actual
backup. The network is a Windows Network.

With the XP machines we cannot access files in
the "Program Files" folder, nor can we access files under
the User Name. Our main concern is backing up the Outlook
settings and data, as well as certain settings in files
contained under the Program Files directories.

Any suggestions???

Bob,

Are the XP computers running XP Home, or XP Pro with Simple File Sharing?

Simple File Sharing uses the Guest account for file sharing, and Guest, by
default, has no access to "C:\Program Files", or the User Name structure. Check
Security, and Sharing - Permissions, for those folders / shares, and add Guest
(or Everyone) to the access lists.

Chuck,

Thanks! I woke up at 4am this morning thinking maybe I
should look at logging in the backup machine as
Administrator or creating a backup-level user on the XP
box.

The workstation in question is running XP Pro and
I "shared" the entire C: drive because of other file
access issues. I know this is sloppy, but I've got user
problems :>)!

Your fix sound much more "elegant".

Thanks again,

Bob,

If you're going to backup those folders, you'll have to get away from Simple
File Sharing. Just turn SFS off (Control Panel - Folder Options - View - (end
of list) uncheck "Use simple file sharing").

I just rechecked my system with Simple File Sharing, and realised that it
doesn't have access lists (that's Advanced File Sharing DOHH). So activate AFS,
and you should be good to go.

Good thing you don't have XP Home - you'd be stuck. :)

I know the user problem bit. You can't work with em, and you can't kill em. :(
