Direct your backup to a drive/partition that is formatted NTFS. You are
limited by the 4 gig barrier inherent in fat32 partitions.

I use WinBackup from LIUtilities to backup 30gb+ in both
NTFS and Fat32. It creates multiple files of approx 3.9g
in either case. It will also also allow you to mix them.
I'm running 3 HDD's on this machine,
one IDE Fat32, one IDE NTFS, one SATA NTFS, and have had
no evident conflicts.

A 32 bit computer word is limited to 2^^32 - which is just enough to
count to 4G bytes. For that reason it is the limit of file size on a
FAT 32 system, and Backup will want to ensure it can make its files on
either system - apart from which it was probably written with a 32 bit
word for the byte count anyway. It is not at all a recent program, and
even five years back a 4G drive was enormous, and the limit of a typical
tape was about 2
