Backup gone wrong?

Hello everyone
I had a problem with my graphics card on my
Samsung R40 laptop and after speaking to ATI technical help the only option I
had remaining was to do a complete reinstallation. I had nothing to loose as
if this didn’t solve the problem the laptop had to be sent away for repare.
Before doing this i used the backup program on vista to backup my documents
(C drive 18GB) to me other built in E drive which was empty.
After
reinstalling all programs on my C drive i tried to use the same program to
reinstall my backup back onto my C drive. Sounds simple doesn’t it but this
is where the problems started because the vista program can’t find my backup.
When i tried it said that no backup was found and i would have to do a backup
before i could procede. I have since backed up my C drive again to my E drive
and that copy is shown to use but my original backup i want to use still
can’t be seen/found .
Help please
Regards
Alan

From your description of what happened, it would appear that you backed
up your files onto a second partition of your laptop which you then
subsequently overwrote. It is always extremely unwise to back up
important data onto one single hard drive.

At this point, your only option is data recovery. I don't hold out a lot
of hope because you have done so much to the drive since you first
discovered the problem. There are data recovery programs that sometimes
will retrieve data on formatted drives, but if the data is as important
as you say I would go straight to a professional data recovery company
such as Drive Savers. This will be expensive, so brace yourself.

If you decide not to do this, then here are some consumer-level data
recovery programs:

http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html
PCInspector File Recovery -
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/welcome.htm
Executive Software “Undelete” -
http://www.execsoft.com/undelete/undelete.asp
R-Studio - http://www.r-tt.com/
File Scavenger - http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm
Ontrack's EasyRecovery - http://www.ontrack.com/software/

If you use data recovery software, install it on another machine and
either use it from that operating system or create a bootable cd/floppy
and work with that. If you don't have the skill and/or equipment to do
these procedures and the data is crucial, take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop that has experience in doing data
recovery. This will not be your local version of BigStoreUSA. In-shop
data recovery is usually not exactly cheap (for ex., my charges are
generally $150-350USD), but it normally costs less than sending the
drive to a company like Drive Savers. You need to make the determination
of the value of your data and decide what to do.
