Backup error stump the MVP?

I made a backup of all my files and settings using the XP
pro backup utility and saving the backup file to a
secondary hard drive. After reinstalling to a clean hard
drive, it no longer recognizes the data file on the other
drive. I get an error: unrecognized media- backup file
contains unrecognized data and cannot be used.

I actually verified the file and restored from it as a
test before formatting my drive since it was the first
time I had used ntbackup.

Since ntbackup won't open it, are there any utilities
that
might let me gain access?

Is there any way to get this data back?

Any help is appreciated...

Just a thought, but if your backup hard disk is NTFS formatted, it could be
a permissions issue. See Help and Support and search for "take ownership"
