Backup and ASR

I installed a program the other day and it recommended that I backup my
registry before I did so. The only way I knew of how to back up the registry
was to backup the entire system. As a result I know have an ASR disk and I
have the backup file created saved to my desktop. It takes up a large
portion of space on my hard drive that I would prefer to be free. I haven't
had any problems w/ my system since downloading the program but I do not want
to take any chances. If I delete the backup file on my computer will the ASR
disk be sufficient to restore my computer if I need to, or do I actually need
the file as well?

But since the file (.bkf) is on the same partition it will do you no good.

The first thing that happens when ASR is run is that the system partition of the HDD is formatted (your .bkf file is now gone), XP is installed and the .bkf is restored, but that can't happen.

The .bkf needs to be on a 2nd HDD or another partition on the HDD.

but so that it is still useable?

Thnx in advance
