I'm using Windows XP on a laptop. When I hit the backspace key when browsing
on internet explorer, it takes me back to the previous page I was on. How do
I change this?

How do I change the settings for the backspace key to stop taking me back to
the previous page I was on in internet explorer.

Find a keyboard remapping utility or keyboard macro utility that lets you
redefine what gets sent to the OS for the scan code received from the
keyboard.

(but their download area isn't free anymore)

In the meantime since my last reply, I also found that the TweakUI powertoy
for Windows XP has a feature to redefine or disable some keys. In TweakUI,
navigate to the following node in the tree:

Explorer -> Command Keys

Never used it so don't how well it works.
