I installed ntbackup from the windows xp cd, but it will only allow me to
back up to a:/ or a removeable drive. How do I back up to a cd there is not
a choice for d:/

You can't. Backup to a folder on your HDD and then burn those files to the
CD......

Basically, you use another program if you want to do this; ntbackup can't.

You may also need to install packet writing software to permit the CD or DVD
drive to be written to as an ordinary disk.

However, you might consider what you actually intend when you say "backing
up hard drive". Do you mean that you want a bootable image? Or do you
want your user data backed up?

If you want a bootable image, use a program like Acronis True Image or Drive
Image.. there are others. If you only need to back up your data, programs
like Avantrix Backup Plus can work well.

When looking for your data to back up, be aware that by default, XP
helpfully puts key user data (like Outlook/OE email and address files) in
hidden directories. Also be aware that if these programs are open, data
may *not* be backed up. Be sure to test and verify your backups before
deciding you're done.

Can you burn data & music CD's?

When I initiate the NTBackup program it pops up a message saying it is 'looking for backup devices' before the program wizard starts. I don't have a problem backing up to CD.

Do you have the required services running for backup to work? IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, MS Software Shadow Copy Provider, Volume Shadow Copy and Removable Storage need to be set to at least manual under Services. Click on Start/ type services.msc and the Services applet will open up. Scroll down to IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service,MS Software Shadow Copy Provider, Removable Storage and Volume Shadow Copy to make sure they are set to at least manual. I leave mine on automatic.

MS Software Shadow Copy Provider
Used in conjunction with the Volume Shadow Copy Service. MS Backup uses these services. You will receive, in the Event Log, a entry complaining about not having this service running if Disabled.

Hi Lynn,

That's easy to do. You need to use a CD-RW or DVD-RW Disk that is
formatted by InCD from Nero or DirectCD from Easy CD Creator or another
program similiar to InCD and DirectCD. These programs allow the CD-RW or
DVD-RW Drive to be used as a Floppy Drive with a preformatted CD-RW or
DVD-RW Disk inside the drive.

Then once you have selected what folders and files to be backed up,
click Browse, then Cancel to be able to Select where you want to place the
Backup information at. Once after making this Backup, the next time, you
wish to backup to the same place, just click the Down Arrow, where you see
the 3½" Floppy (A:) shown. You choose will then be shown and you can just
click on it.

WinXP's NTBackup does not recognize CDRs, CDRWs, or DVD/RWs as valid
backup media. By design, it will only write back-ups to tape drives or
another physical or logical hard drive. Many people back-up to a spare
hard drive, and then burn the resulting file to a CD, as a work-around.
Another option, of course, is to use a 3rd party backup solution.

I make a statement in my post

"When I initiate the NTBackup program it pops up a message saying it is 'looking for backup devices' before the program wizard starts. I don't have a problem backing up to CD."

the previous posters Gordon & Patrick don't believe you can backup to CD using NTBackup. Fair enough.

I then posted and said I could. I have done it enough to nauseating.

Then, the NEXT day, a post by Bruce Chambers stating " WinXP's NTBackup does not recognize CDRs, CDRWs, or DVD/RWs as valid backup media. blah blah blah..."

I don't think Bruce reads previous answers in a post before putting his bit.

I can and do use NTBackup to make a backup to a CDR or a CDRW or to a removeable drive (external hard drive), no problem.

I have Nero 5.5 on the comp. I wasn't aware that a third party program had to installed on the comp to make NTBackup work because it is not used as part of the process.. Also I have never pre formatted a CD/RW before using it as a backup disk, the process goes through without a hitch. Does it make a difference if you are running XP Pro?

That's quite correct - NTBackup will NOT back up to CD ON ITS OWN, using the
XP CD Burning function. If you have a third-party application, and format
your CDRW for packet writing, then yes, NTBackup WILL backup to CD, but only
under those conditions.

Thanks for the update Gordon. But, I have never pre formatted a CD/RW before using it as a backup disk, the process goes through without a hitch.
