backing up file

Where did you get the file from?

What do you want to do with it? Such info would help a lot to answer
your question.

First thoughts are, that's a file created by XP's native backup utility
ntbackup.exe. You'll need the same version of ntbackup that created the
file if that's what it is. Otherwise the link already provided might
help you figure it out.

I got the file while backing up files on my computer. I first tried to
backup all the files to a folder in my desktop. the files got up backed up
with an extension .bkf
I then copied all those files to an external hard disk. howeve, i am unable
to open those files.
