Backgrounrd Programs

When I get redy to download a program I get the message
to shutdown back ground programs. I do not knopw how to
do this. Also I would like to shut down programs on start-
up, but am unsure which I can shut down as I have no idea
which programs must be kept. The abbreviations on many of
them confuse me' Thanks in advance.
