When I place photos in the my pictures folder, they also showup in the
desktop background list. Anybody seen this before? I'm running Home Edition.

This is a feature of Windows XP. it makes it easy for users to apply any of
their pictures (which are mainly stored in My Pictures folder) to a desktop
backgroud.

That's by design. If you do not wish to have the
images in your My Pictures folder available as
desktop backgrounds all you have to do is move
them to a different folder.

If you wish to get more involved...have a look at
the following message that was previously posted
by Kelly
========================================
========================================
The pictures that show up under display properties, desktop are located in
these folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents\My Pictures
C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper
C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Under My Computer scroll down to Shared Documents/Shared Pictures. If
Shared Pictures is listed, remove it.

TweakUI for XP: Unchecking "Lock Web Content" under Explorer to be added
to desktop disables the pictures from being listed.

Workarounds:

Create another folder (under your user profile), remove the pictures from My
Pictures that you don't want listed under Backgrounds and in the My Pictures
folder, create a shortcut to the new folder. Or create subfolders within My
Pictures.

Add Folders to the "Save As" Dialog (Places Bar) Line 117

Disable Default Save As to My Pictures (Line 111)

Add Folder to Start Menu to replace/re-route My Pictures (Line 2)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Yes, this is normal. The default with XP is to make all photos in the My
Pictures folder, as well as any subfolder in it, available for desktop and
listed.
The only way to avoid this is to make a new folder on your hard drive, call
it something you want like My Photos, and then make all the subfolders you
want for each group of photos you download. Pretty easy to select a picture
from any folder to set it as the desktop. You just select it, look at the
menu on the left under Picture Tasks and click on "Set as desktop
background".
I don't understand why XP has this particular default setting, since it is
so easy to select a picture from the Picture Tasks feature, while selecting
one from the background list is a pain if you have a lot of pictures.
The only way out is to make your own new folder and then move the pictures
from My Pictures to your new folder and subfolders.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I did the folder
workaround, but it still got my goat. I looked everywhere
but here for the answer. I think I'll use Kelly's post.
