How can I keep Outlook active minimally, so that I know when new emails
arrive, without actually just minimizing the application? Can it ne a system
tray ap using only a minimal amount of memory?
 
What version of outlook? Outlook 2002 has a registry key you can use,
Outlook 2003 has it built into the tray icon. Older versions need a 3rd
party utility.

Hi,
right click on the icon in the systray
and activate, minimized when open!

No, that would be activate "Hide when Minimized"
