How do I find out what applications are running in the background? My hard
drive seems to be whirring for a long time without input from me. At the
same time some applications don't work properly and the system wants to
default to whichever application shortcut is located in the bottom right
corner of the desktop.

www.sysinternals.com Download Process Explorer, free. It will tell you
everything that is running on your machine, including background processes
and the amount of cpu usage in % by each. It has a bunch of other great
features, as well.
