background on drop down menus using XP PRO

Over the last couple of days, I've started seeing a strange behavior in other apps (IE 6 is the only Microsoft app its appeared in). When clicking on a menu item, expecting the drop down items to appear. They do not. Instead I see lines appearing, outlining the edge of the drop down, but the content is transaparent. When I move the mouse over one of the items, it appears. I don't remember seeing this before yesterday. And yesterday I did update the drivers for my sound card, but otherwise haven't installed anything that could have caused the problem. Any ideas on how to correct the problem would be appreciated.
 
Sorry, also forgot to mention same thing occurs on desktop icons and icons in the system tray
