i used to be able to do background fills, but now on my notebook, which runs
office powerpoint 2003 on XP, i can't seem to be able to that. Each time i do
it, a plain colour background appears.

However, if i open one of my old filesin which i have that working, it will
work.

I would appreciate it very much if you can help me resolve this.
many thanks

Are you referring to setting the fill of the AutoShape as background? If so,
check to see if you have inserted the picture through Format > Background.
Background insert through Insert > Picture will not appear as Background Fill
in AutoShape.

If it still doesn't work, set the background to white, then re-insert your
background again. I have tested it a few times and it doesn't work as always.
Seems like a bug.

Do you mean that you cannot apply texture / pattern/ picure etc?

What happens when you try?

yes, if i try to fill an autoshape with 'background' a plain coloured
background appears instead of the usual background fill. Same problem if I do
a background fill of wordart.

The background is format/background, and not insert pic.

Strange thing is if I open an old file for which this has been done before,
I can use this function as per normal. But not for newly created files.

no, that works perfectly. It's just the background fill of autoshapes and
wordart that doesn't work.

The only way I'm aware that we can create a background fill in an autoshape
is via the Format Autoshape dialog.

I understand you've used Format|Background for your slide background (as
opposed to Insert|Picture on the master). Are you using a picture for the
background? It's not partially transparent or anything like that, is it?

What happens if you move the autoshape around on the slide? Does the picture
eventually show up? What color is the fill? Is it one of the colors in your
slide color scheme?

What about changing hardware acceleration?

Are you up to date with all service packs for Office/PPT?

Hi Ed,
Try changing the background to white and re-insert the background through
Format > Background again. Like what I have said earlier, I tested it a few
times and for some reasons which I am unknown of, it works the first round,
and failed the second time.

yes, its format/background rather than inset pic. The background is one of
these standard designer bgs with no picture. The flat colour pane that
appears does contain one of the colours in the bg...

will try your other suggestions...thanks

nope, doesn't work...I tried these before many times and can't get it to
work. Only way I've found to circumvert it is to use an old ppt file for
which I have alread done a bg fill...
then I edit it that. TIn that situation the bg fill command works.

have updated service patches, and dropped the hardware accerations without
effect...

seems like if i create the background using the working slide instead of
doing at the slide master. The background fill will work. But if i use the
slide master to fill the background, then background fill doesnt work. Not
sure whats happening.
At least there is a way for me to work around the problem, but it remains a
real pain...

Yes, it is a pain, and I think it's a bona fide bug. Tohlz and I were
talking about it a little elsewhere, and I missed that it works okay the
first time, but not if you replace the background. Once I realized that, it
repro'd every time. For me, that happened (PPT 2003 SP2) even on the regular
slide, not just on the master.

any solutions?

BTW thanks for all the help so far...

Ed,
I don't think it will ever work in Slide Master. I tried couple of times and
never get it to work.

A possible workaround which works for me.
Go to View > Master > Slide Master.
Open up the Slide Design.
Replace it with one of the templates.
Make sure you see the background fill working. If it doesn't, choose another
template.
Then, click Format > Background. Change it to your own background.
See if it works this time round.

Ed,
I can't guarantee it will work. Try sending me a copy of the ppt and
background to pptheaven[at]gmail[dot]com. I might be able to work it out for
you.
