Autoshape fill pattern with transparent background?

Is there any way of getting a transparent background to a fill pattern
(Powerpoint 2000 or 2003)?

I have never found one, and end up using a transparent fill colour instead,
when I want to highlight something on a diagram but allow the original to be
seen underneath. Unfortunately this prints as a solid area on some printers
so it's not a good solution.
