Background display disabled

Some virus or spy ware corrupted my display settings. I lost the Desktop,
Screen Saver and Appearance tabs in my Display box. I did find help in a
newsgroup article and was able to get back the tabs; however the Desktop tab
will not let me select any backgrounds listed, will not enable me to browse
or center. All selections are disabled? I believe that this has to do with
something missing or corrupted in my registry. How can I fix?

Joe,

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Backup the keys.
Delete the values "Wallpaper" and "WallPaperStyle" in the right-pane.
