Background Defrag crashes

I receive a message from time to time that says "Disk Defragmenter Module has
encountered a problem and needs to close...." I didn't start it so it must be
a an automated background process. It only seems to happen if I leave one of
my VC.NET solutions open.
How do I prevent this defrag from running? I prefer to run the tools when I
want to, not when they want to ;-)

Disk Defragmenter is not capable of running as a scheduled process, unless
YOU do some extra ordinary moves to make it happen, such as downloading a
script file and applying it to the registry or manually editing the registry
yourself.

What did YOU do to make it happen?

Even if you are using a 3rd party defragmenter you have to set up a schedule
to have back ground processing.

According to the section on "Prefetch" in this article
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/01/12/XPKernel/default.aspx, the
degragmenter does indeed run in the background all on it's own.

defragmenter is run automatically "every 3 days or so" all on it's own.
