backdoor.imserv virus in compressed file

I have followed the removal instructions from symantec
for the removal of the backdoor.imserv virus found in my
computer, however norton will not allow me to delete it,
after the full system scan. My computer is still showing
the infection and I'm at a loss as to how to remove it. I
don't want to go in and remove an exe file that is
essential to my computer.
Please help
thank you

I've seen that kind of behaviour when Norton/Symantec does not terminate the
process before trying to delete/quarantine the file. If you look at the
process list in Task Manager you will often, though not always, find a
process with the same name as the file.
You should always look up the virus on the AV vendor's web site to see if
there are any special considerations if it fails to remove the virus for
you.
Seems you are strongly advised to at least change all your passwords after
removing the virus, since they may have been compromised (backdoor tends to
denote a Trojan).
