Back up utility does not work with DVD-RW drive?

I tried to use the back up utility to back up files to my
DVD-RW drive, but I ge4t a message that says "Backup file
name could not be used. Please ensure it is a valid path."

I can use the drive to create music Cd's, etc. with other
programs (iTunes). Any idea why the utility will not let
me back up to this drive?
