Dear MVPs

Back-Up To File Failure From FAT32 to NTFS and NTFS to
NTFS Volumes
-----------------------------------------------------------
--------
O/S : Windows 2000 Professional.
APPLICATION: Microsoft Backup

STORY SO FAR
------------

Below are the facts as we know them. Here is the story as
we choose
to tell it. MS Backup cans the PC during a large backup
job. 2.5Gb
comprising an entire disks O/S and apps and data to a
single file.
Somewhere around 1Gb+ comes the dreaded "boop" and the
familiar
POST display. Yep, another one slams to the lot. FAT 32 or
NTFS
source volume, backup is indiscriminate and an equal
volume backup
destroyer. However, what is unique is the destination
volume NTFS.
Maxtor 5000LE by USB (1.x) cable communications. But
backup from
c:\> FAT32 to D:\> NTFS (that's internal) to a file is
successful.

FACTS TO DATE
-------------

SITUATION: Microsoft Backup (software) reboots the PC
during the Backup.

The backup is from C:\> FAT32 to a Maxtor 5000LE USB (1.x).
The backup is the entire hard disk volume to a single file.
The backup is unsuccessful.

The backup is from D:\> NTFS to a Maxtor 5000LE USB (1.x).
The backup is the entire hard disk volume to a single file.
The backup is unsuccessful.

MORE INFORMATION: Situation reported to maxtor.com .
STATUS : Unresolved.

O/S : Windows 2000 Professional.
APPLICATION: Retrospect Express Backup (5.6.132)
: Retrospect Express Driver (3.1.103)

STORY SO FAR
------------

Below are the facts as we know them. Here is the story as
we choose
to tell it. REX Backup cans the PC during a large backup
job. 2.5Gb

single file.

MORE INFORMATION: Situation reported to dantz.com .
STATUS : Unresolved.

EXTRA INFORMATION: Duplicate feature operates properly and
successfully completes duplications
from
C:\> FAT 32 and D:\> NTFS to Maxtor
NTFS.

Backup feature operates successfully
between
C:\> FAT 32 to D:\> NTFS to a single
file.

Mr Wizard .. a little help .. please

So, is it hardware, is it software, is it communications ..
what, my expert and problem solving friends .. is it?
And what can we do, here?

Yours very sincerely

Stuart

PS. Windows XP PC connected to Maxtor 5000LE (USB 2.x)
performs
similar Microsoft Backups and Retrospect Express
backups
(and duplications), flawlessly (i.e. without
incident).
NTFS to NTFS.

Using a backup app to backup the o/s is not really going to achieve much, ie
it wont assist a reinstall.
