NTFS/FAT32 Backups & Restores

B

Bruce Simkins

Are their data loss risks to backups & restores between NTFS & FAT32 drives?
For example:

1. Backup a FAT32 drive to a NTFS folder (& vice versa)
2. Restore a FAT32 drive from a NTFS backup file (& vice versa)

What is the correct protocol for data safety & reliability.

Thanks

From a data point of view it does not matter what file
system you use to back up to.

However, since FAT32 has no access control features,
all NTFS permissions are lost when backing up to FAT32.
If you subsequently restore such data, the NTFS permissions
may be set incorrectly. The exact outcome depends on
the permission structure of your files & folders, what you
restore and how you restore it.
