avp.exe

I have never used the paid version, so I can't give you feedback on
that. It's probably a good program.

I had recommended the *free* Avast program (not a trial version of the
paid program). If you think the extra features are worth the money they
charge, perhaps you might want to purchase it when the trial is up. But
keep in mind you also have the option to uninstall it before the trial
is over and instead install the freeware version.

I seem to remember some people reported issues around performance with
its VRDB (Virus Recovery Database) running in the backgound, but I'm
sure most people have no problems with it. Just be aware.

Some antivirus programs have features which in my opinion are
unnecessary and potentially resource hogs like e-mail scanning. You
should keep that in mind, too.

Hopefully The Shield's uninstall program was written well and your
result is there is no detritus leftover. If you still get issues with
Windows error messages referencing avp.exe, you probably have leftover
registry entries that need to be addressed (relatively rare but it
sometimes happens). Hopefully, though, those messages will be gone! If
not, post back.

Hi Daave - just to update you, recap what I did, & let you know that after 10
days I have had no recurrence of my previous problems:

I uninstalled Registry Mechanic (& as advised I will stay away from all
'Registry Cleaners').
I uninstalled PC Security Shield & briefly tried the Avast program. But
coincidentally I found that my ISP 'Rogers Cable' in Toronto, Canada, now
provides a new, free OnLine Security Package ('new' meaning that it is no
longer Norton based. When I first set up my new HP laptop, I had so many
conflicts with Norton related products that HP Support recommended that I
switch to another AntiVirus program - which is why I installed PC Security
Shield).
I uninstalled all trial Antivirus programs & installed the free program from
the ISP.
Since then, 10 days ago, everything is running smoothly.

To be fair to Registry Mechanic & PC Security Shield, both programs served
me well for several years, & I'm not technically qualified to claim that
either of them caused or contributed to my recent problems.

But now I don't have to subscribe to anybody (my ISP program is totally
free), & things seem to be OK now.

Many thanks to you & all the other contributors to this thread.
