Known causes for upgrade failures to Vista RC1: 1 Uninstall all AV products,
do not disable, uninstall, 2 Uninstall any beta programs including IE7 and
Office 2007, 3 Uninstall CD/DVD player and authoring programs including
Nero, Power DVD, Win DVD and Sonic, 4 Uninstall other programs including MS
Works 8, PM 8, DK10, HP Director, IntelliType Pro 5.x, Microsoft Powertoys
for XP, ZoneAlarm 6, Sun Java Scheduler and PerfectDisk, 5 Uninstall any
other programs listed by "Upgrade advisor" or listed during installation.
After uninstalling the programs perform a disk cleanup and defragmentation,
unplug any external devices except for LAN, including printers, USB drives
and sticks. I have verified this by performing 3 successful upgrade
installations of Vista RC1 x86 on 2 towers and 1 laptop. There are other
conflicting programs but the ones listed I have uninstalled or read about
needing to be uninstalled.

Thank goodness a much better "upgrade" solution is in the works. Windows
Easy Transfer get a little brother at Vista rtm. The Windows Easy Transfer
Companion beta will be available at launch or shortly after. The Companion
does for applications what WET does for files and settings. It will provide
folks with much better control over what (and how) apps get reinstalled
after upgrading from XP to Vista. Instead of uninstalling anything you can
just run the Companion in XP, select and deselect what to transfer, and then
do a Custom installation of Vista and run the WET and WET Companion on the
new installation. The best of both worlds.

Will this WET Companion also uninstall the selected programs or will it
still be necessary to uninstall them?

That's strange, I installed with Sonic, power DVD, ms Works 8, it did not
inform me to remove them during installation, and apart from Works 8, which
if you try to use it,gives a incompatalbe message, all running fine with no
problems.

It is the alternative to having to uninstall anything. Instead of
installing Vista with the Upgrade option you would wipe the disk by
installing with the Custom option. Then you would use WET and WET Companion
to move your files, settings, and apps that you previously saved with the
WET and WET Companion wizards while still in XP.

You would not use both the Upgrade installation option and the WET
Companion. The advantage I see is that those who have always been more
comfortable with a clean install in pre-Vista Windows can take comfort in
doing a Custom install of Vista but still have the means to avoid all those
hours of reinstalling apps manually.

If you do an Upgrade installation of Vista, the WET Companion's job would
have already been done, but without the fine-grained control.

Your mileage may always vary but I concur that anything that uses any sort
of software engine to montor events or scan for changes should to come off
before installation of Vista and then be reinstalled unless compat issues
are known. Just because you are doing fine does not mean that there cannot
be issues for others and many such issues have been reported in this and
other Vista ng's. Remember, users vary greatly in how they use a particular
program and you may simply not hit have a speedbump yet becasue of your
usage scenarios.

I just installed upgrade to Vista Premium from XP SP2. Got the error message
about Sun Java Scheduler. I did not get an warning from the Vista Scan that
this would be an issue. Can anyone tell me how to uninstall?, it is not
listed separately on the Uninstall Program section of the control panel???
Thanks so much for the help.

Juanette:
Sun Java should be listed as J2SE runtime in add/remove programs.
Have a great day.

Okay, now I see it. But, since you seem to know, perhaps I could ask another
stupid question. What happens if I delete it now after, unfortunately, I
went ahead and installed Vista Premium? (I am sorry I did not see the
posting right away because I could, then, not get my email to work. I just
now saw this posting.)

Juanette:
The Java scheduler is for checking for updates on a regular basis,
it shouldn't effect system operation. If the computer is functioning
properly, uninstalling Java now and installing the updated version should be
no problem. Have a great day.

I haven't heard of any problems uninstalling Sun's Java on Vista. You can
then re-install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 from
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp or a slightly older version
from http://java.com.
