Windows Vista to Win7 Upgrade Hangs, Fix Does Not Work

We are trying to upgrade a Windows Vista machine to Windows 7 and we are
getting that error where it hangs on 62%. We tried the fix as detailed in KB
Article 975253 but the upgrade still hangs/fails. Are there any other
options to perform an upgrade that could be recommended (eg booting to VGA
mode, disabling some services first, uninstalling some specific programs,
etc...) ? For this one machine we would really like to avoid having to
reinstall everything from scratch - which would take days. TIA ...
