AVI & WMV thumbnails missing

All AVI and WMV files display an icon rather than a thumbnail image. JPG
photos etc are all OK. I think this is a codec issue as the icon displayed
changed when I swapped from CCCP codecs to K-Lite.

I have tried other suggestsions form this forum, inclduing F5 and using disk
cleanup to clear the thumbnail cache.

Is this a codec issue? Any ideas on how to resolve?

Further experimenting shows that my comments re the codec are a red herring.
The installation of the CCCP and K-Lite codecs merely changed the file
association from Media Player to Media Player Classic, hence the change of
icons.
