avi files won't play for me

I am very ignorant I'm afraid, but would really appreciate some basic help!

I have quicktime player, windows media player, itunes, also winamp, Nero
Start Smart, and X Pack Mini DVD Player.

A friend has sent me 2 avi files - but after major efforts, I am still
unable to play them. Quicktime looks willing - the sound is up and the
progression icon is moving, but the screen is black, and there is no sound.

Any advice would be welcome.

I don't know if the info at following link will
solve your issue with .avi files but it may
be worth a look:

Many thanks John Inzer and Jerry,

John, I have bookmarked the page you recommended for future use - it looks
very helpful.

Jerry, I downloaded the prog you recommended. It is only free for 15 days,
but given the rare usuage I will make of it this is fine.

I have now watched the videos sent to me. Thank you both very much!
