Windows Media Player will play them, as will many other media players, but
ONLY if you have the right codecs installed. You can instally GSpot to
specifically identify the required codec, but I have found that the ffdshow
codec alone will display just about every avi file: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/
Don't go installing any "codec packs" until you have first tried ffdshow.
