AVI file plays but moviemaker can't read - missing codec

I've read through the codec explanation site and don't understand why the AVI
files play just fine but moviemaker still says that the codec is missing and
can't play the file?

An AVI file is a generic video file type.... there are hundreds of
compressors (codecs) that can make them and read them, made by different
companies or people, and not necessarily interchangeable.

To view an AVI file, you need an appropriate codec.... and maybe other
codecs to make an AVI.

If a video file was a 'dessert', an AVI might be 'ice cream', and the codec
'cherry garcia'.
