avi file locks up powerpoint

Hi All! thanking anyone for a reply. PP2003

I try to insert a avi extension movie 5mg into my powerpoint but fail. You
see a picture on the slide but then powerpoint then locks up. Then you have
to use the taskmanager to get out of powerpoint. the ppt and avi file are in
the same directory. What am I missing?

Does the video mplay in mplay32.exe (from start > run)?
Have you installed any software that may have altered
settings eg video editors / divx player?--

Mwv files insert fine. Is there a way to convert avi files to mwv to
overcome this problem.
