AVG wont update?

Recently upgraded to 7 and now it will not update. I have Zone Alarm
firewall, and AVG has full access. It was working fine than last week It
stopped updating. I downloaded AVG again and ran the repair with no
success. I remember a year or so ago there was a problem with the AVG
server and I was able to change the download site from Grisoft.cz to
something else. Can I do that with version 7?
I have read about AVAST(sp?) is that a free program as well? I like AVG
and have used it for the last 3 years or so and would like to keep it.
I would appreciate any information that I may have missed in my google
search.

I just switched from Norton to AVG and also can't get it to update this
morning (Friday 21). I recently upgraded Windows to Service Pack 2. Wonder
if that's causing a problem? (Everything else seems OK.) Tried disabling the
Windows firewall but that didn't help. Any ideas??

Try downloading the latest update directly from Grisoft.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php

After that things should be back to normal.
I agree, the updates are taking a lot longer than normal, but they do
install eventually.

I took advice and uninstalled AVG and installed Avast! Wrong.
Avast! was too slow and used too many resources at least on my machine.
Also had problems with the GUI which finally seized up tonight.
So I reinstalled AVG 7 and had the same problem with updates that you have.
I browsered to grisoft.com and then tried the auto update again and it
worked.
Persistence pays.

How do you run the repair? When I try it ,it asks for
the folder that contains the installation, where is it?
As for adding download servers to AVG,you cannot
do it.I tried adding them using the AVG6 method, but
the program does not accept them. You can only add
servers in the Pro version.Bit stupid really, what difference
does it make to Grisoft which server you use?
I just dumped AVG in favour of Avast and the scanning time
is far too long, about 45-50 minutes,so I am going to reinstall
AVG7 and persevere with the update problem.

Disable the 'on-boot' scan and just use the Avast resident shield, then only
let it run an on-boot scan when you want it to...

Or find a serial number for the Pro version!!! (not that I condone such
piracy, but hey it's the internet and finding such things isn't exactly
brain surgery)..

When configured properly Avast runs much smoother that AVG 7 ever did - no
update issues (dont even know it is updating until it finishes!), resident
scanner doesnt really slow things down (very occassionally it does a little
bit, but usually when I have several things running!!) and it seems to
detect things that I know AVG6 and 7 never blinked at (and yes I know they
aren't false positives).

But, in the end, you need to be happy with what you are using. The switch
from AVG to Avast isn't easy (I anguished for days over changing) so those
that are blindly happy with AVG - good luck and just keep persisting..

This problem still exists as of today ( 2005 02 02)
I've started posting updates over in
ALT.BINARIES.WAREZ.IBM-PC
I can't post the updates here because this newsgroup doesn't allow
binary attachments.
I posted a message to this effect on the AVG Free-Forum but apparently
it wasn't cleared for posting.

You can do a "manual" update IF you can get through the servers to the
update file.

I've provided links in my messages to the correct AVG pages, both the
Forum and the Update.
